What we wrote at the time…
Philip Jeck’s unique take on turntable experimentation involves adamantly analogue compositions using multiple, battered old turntables and scratchy old records. As interested in the physical properties of vinyl as the music pressed into it, he creates beautifully emotive polyphonic concertos of surface-noise, gently but urgently looping and hiccupping, allowing scraps of melody to emerge from the original music. Equal parts spectacle, installation and performance, his set for us is a specially developed work, ‘turning’, which features an orchestra of multiple turntables, 4 projections and a collection of old, and, quite probably, misfiring analogue kit.
