Launch of the publication timeback, featuring an interview with Jerá Guarani, Nhande’i va’e Indigenous educator, activist and thinker, held by Chilean-born artist and researcher Amilcar Packer.

Jera’s is one of the leaderships of the Kalipety village, which is situated at Tenondé Porã, a Guarani ‘land back’ Territory, located in what is colonially known as São Paulo, Brazil. Since Jerá couldn’t join us in Glasgow, and as a way to acknowledge her contribution to Episode 12, Packer suggested the interview that is transcribed in timeback, manifesting her presence and marking our solidarity with the struggles of Kalipety. As part of the launch, Packer will animate a conversation on the possible anti-colonial implications of situated relational times and their resonances with notions such as asynchrony, inseparability, spacetime.

Overview

In March and early April 2026, through our friend and collaborator Amilcar Packer, Arika and a group of guests made a research trip to São Paulo, Brazil. As part of this journey, we visited Kalipety, which is situated at Tenondé Porã, a Guarani ‘land back’ Territory, located in what is colonially known as São Paulo, Brazil, where we were received and hosted by Jerá Guarani, a Nhande’i va’e educator, activist and thinker, whose leadership and educational militancy encompasses centuries of continuous Indigenous struggles across what was colonially named as South America. Sustained by Guarani cosmopoetics and spirituality, land back and food sovereignty, Kalipety approaches practices of permanent collective care to guaranteeing the conditions of possibility of the Nhandereko (Guarani word that describes the Guarani mode of life and being) in their Tekoha (Guarani word that describes a space which is always simultaneously physical, social and spiritual), a spacetime where Guarani people can live their lives.

Since Jerá Guarani cannot join us in Glasgow, Packer suggested the interview transcribed in timeback as a way to acknowledge her contribution for Episode 12, manifesting her presence and making our solidarity with the struggles at Kalipety, Tenondé Porã. The interview with Jerá Guarani was held on June 25, 2026, at Kalipety in the Tenondé Porã Guarani Territory.

For this session, Packer will both introduce the publication and attempt to draw out some resonances of the interview with Jerá and notions such as asynchrony, inseparability, and spacetime, inviting us to approach ‘land back’ as a practice always already inscribed in demands for relational, situated and collective times before and against colonial Space and Time.

In 2024, for Episode 11, Arika had as guest speakers Guarani activist and Social Psychologist Geni Núñez and Pataxó artist and curator Arissa Pataxó, both working with Denise Ferreira da Silva and Amilcar Packer in sessions that can be accessed in Arika’s website. These contributions extend as well in an interview with writer, poet and Indigenous leader, Ailton Krenak, to account for transnational solidarity to land back movement, in the present case within Indigenous anti-colonial struggles in the colonial present of Brazil.
