Poetic Justice
Poetic Justice
Poetic Justice, Dir. Hollis Frampton, 1972, USA, 31 mins
WHO
High conceptualist and rigorous inventor of exciting new cinematic systems.
VERY SIMPLE PROPOSAL
A cinema of the mind, a film to take place in the viewers’ imagination(s).
WHY
“I disbelieved that filmmaking started, like making love by telephone, with a script…” says Frampton. Poetic Justice deliberately confuses the projection of a film and the projection of the mind, implicating you the viewer in a narrative¹ of sexuality, infidelity and voyeurism.

¹ Retooled and stripped bare so as to be understood afresh. “A specter is haunting the cinema: the specter of narrative. If that apparition is an Angel, we must embrace it; and if it is a Devil, then we must cast it out. But we cannot know what it is until we have met it face to face.”– A Pentagram for Conjuring the Narrative, Hollis Frampton.
