Some of her landmark early works feature the kind of scouring white noise that would make Merzbow blush. More recently, she has constructed her music around subtle and haunting drones generated by her just-tuned and electronically manipulated accordion, hooking up an abundance of delays and reverbs (tuning her solo playing into a kind of Hydra-accordion ensemble) to twist pitches and unfurl sonorous, dense overtones and ghost chords, rich in eerie textures, and allowing her to explore the individual characteristics of each room she plays in.

At Instal Pauline will be playing with David Dove, director of the Deep Listening Institute and a liberated improvising trombonist who has easily cut loose from established improvisational patterns. In a live setting, his circular, singing tones seem capable of tracing the resonance of the architecture, and act alongside Pauline’s playing to measure both your own and the room’s wavelength. For this, their first performance in the UK, they’ll be using a specially installed eight-channel PA, allowing them to work in three dimensions with the unique acoustic properties of the Arches
