The AACM’s founding documents concern community self-determination (in the shadow of the Great Migration and racial segregation) as much as they do music. Many of the key figures of European free improvisation were attempting to embody musically Marxist or even Maoist ideas of social organisation. How might two of the great musicians working within those contrasting traditions of freedom collaborate? What might this produce: musically, socially, allegorically?
