Steffen Basho-Junghans

What we wrote at the time…

German steel-string guitar maven Steffen Basho-Junghans had released numerous works over many years before a bout of RSI induced pain forced him to reevaluate his playing technique. It led to an epiphanic embracing of deliberate binds and limitations [only using one finger, or one string] that forced new and extreme understandings and chance discoveries with his acoustic steel string guitar. The results have been quite spectacular, as over the past 4 years Junghans has released a slew of albums ranging from repetitive, mesmerizing, East meets West rhythmic workouts much in the fashion of the Takoma label, [and their holy triumvirate of John Fahey, Leo Kottke and Junghans hero and adoptive namesake, Robbie Basho], to pieces of stark and rigorous introspection, where notes picked and slid in isolation, scatter like mercury around the listener. His performance at Instal is his first in the UK.
