Can things be otherwise than they are? Some of the work shown at Arika events asks “What if?” on some pretty radical levels. We’re also grouping work here which explores identity, and the negotiation of identities through different modes of performance. Some fine examples include the boychild performances from Episode 5: Hidden in Plain Sight and the rich and in depth Realness discussion between participants at Episode 6: Make a Way Out of No Way.
Paper Piece: Secrets is a performance for and with the whole audience, using paper, text, secrets, being in the crowd
Listening to people listening to their own homes. Musicians and actors will listen back to recordings made in local peoples homes on headphones, and interpret/ translate what they are hearing.
Taking a scalpel to the relationship between performer and audience: cutting something out to see what’s left, a drastic subtraction and shift of emphasis.
Conceived of as a dual publication, video cassette and booklet, to be presented as an installation. The content of the videotape is the artist watching television.
This programme takes human subjects as the focus for sound and image construction. And it includes a couple of masterpieces of experimental film: Paul Sharits’ deeply empathetic interpretation of epilepsy and Peter Kubelka’s Webern inspired abstract portrait of Arnulf Rainer.
