Taku Unami
Taku Unami
Taku tests out ideas that involve maximum effort for (seemingly) minimum output. But really his actions and events strip back musical performance to one of its original proposals: what is an action and how does it create a situation for spending time together, for paying attention?
ReadA performance is a time spent together. What happens when we spend time together, agitating? An agitator is a mechanism to put something into motion by shaking or stirring (An egg whisk is an agitator, but so were the Levellers. No, not the band, the political movement during the English Civil Wars that called for popular sovereignty, extended suffrage, equality before the law…). Taku Unami is an agitator: he sets things in motion (rice, metal, cardboard, little homemade motors) creating sound; he sets music in motion (by examining new ideas) creating progress.
