Argument – We would argue: an ante/post discussion group

Argument – We would argue: an ante/post discussion group

Ian and Gil will host a discussion on the Argument project’s social and political commentaries, and with you try and maybe think through whether and how they might still have some currency today: what’s changed and what’s stayed the same?

Ian White is a writer 1 and (predominantly performance) artist 2 , and curator 3 . Gil Leung, too, is a writer 4 and curator 5 , and Distribution Manager at LUX, who along with Ian, instigated the restoration of Argument, which until then had sat unseen for nearly 20 years.

The concerns of Argument – namely the hidden ideology of images, but also the making and screening of political films – spilled over and required filmmakers Anthony McCall and Andrew Tyndall to make extra-filmic decisions about how to present those ideas. And so: the project also included a book of important essays (‘Sixteen Working Statements‘, ‘Artist as Businessman‘ and ‘Against the Numbers Theory‘), images from the film, responses and reviews. And each screening was intended as the starting point for a discussion on the topics raised; audience numbers were limited so as to allow for a decent conversation.

Along those lines, Ian and Gil will host a discussion on the project’s social and political commentaries, and with you try and maybe think through whether and how they might still have some currency today: what’s changed and what’s stayed the same?
