Projection of LIGHT MUSIC by Liz Rhodes in DCA Dundee

Expanded Cinema: LIGHT MUSIC

Expanded Cinema: LIGHT MUSIC

Light Music is a dizzying celebration of the pivotal nature of sound in film; a direct and powerful transcription of film as sound. I hesitate to say that it’s hallucinogenic, but by positioning the projectors to maximise their impact in an open space and projecting through a thin veil of haze, Light Music certainly plays with your temporal and spatial awareness. Rhodes has created a direct link between image and sound by printing black and white horizontal bands across the film and its optical soundtrack; in doing so image is made auditory. To be honest though, writing that down gives you absolutely no indication whatsoever of the tremendous, visceral power this film has to articulate and tune a space. Nor does it really put across how groundbreaking the film is, how it makes you think about the cinematic experience, or how spectacular it is to experience.
