With their first album “Distant Early Warning”, Icebreaker International seemed destined to be one of our great post-rock hopes, no Chuck Mangione horns etc, more Steve Reich influenced, by his “Phase Patterns” for example. Lovely. Austere. The second album builds on this previous success with a commission from NATOarts: “an international arts organisation which seeks to promote global security and stability through the exhibition of works of conceptual art.” Consisting of New York’s Alexander Perls and London’s Simon “the duo have worked on a commission as specified by the NATOarts Board of Directors to produce an audio report that would promote free international trade”. The result is another step forward for the band, with the addition of burbling electronics, tape loops and spoken word samples. The live show is conceived as a whole, with the accompaniment of a video piece named The Sakhalin Five, which shows the actual research mission in Yokohama and on the said icebreaker.
