Umbrella Lane Book Proposals Call Out

00:00–00:00 Mon 24 May

Umbrella Lane, in partnership with Arika, are producing a sex worker led book around the theme of Lies and Truths, that takes the quotes below as a starting point for exploration.

Lies & Truths. As wide ranging as that can be… Self denial, sexual repression, political lies, misinformation, the things we do to get by…how to live authentic lives rooted in our essence and vitality especially during this pandemic era, the ways we find not only to survive but assert ourselves, how we draw power - from what Audre Lorde termed the erotic - in daily life and as part of nature….

We invite people with lived experience of sex work to submit proposals - or finished pieces of work, if you happen to have already created something you think will fit.

We will be including creative work in the form of:

  • Visual works, full colour or black & white
  • Written pieces – maximum word length 2000
  • Pieces that merge text and illustration
  • Poetry

The unconscious wants truth, as the body does. The complexity and fecundity of dreams come from the complexity and fecundity of the unconscious struggling to fulfil that desire. The complexity and fecundity of poetry come from the same struggle.

From Lies, Secrets and Silence by Adrienne Rich

Excerpted from the essay Women and Honor: Some Notes on Lying

The erotic is a measure between the beginnings of our sense of self and chaos of our strongest feelings. ... For the erotic is not a question only of what we do; it is a question of how acutely and fully we can feel in the doing.

From Sister Outsider by Audre Lorde

Excerpted from the chapter The Uses of the Erotic The Erotic as Power

The idea is to represent a range of experiences and diversities. We want to add to the collective process of contextualising our lives in an intersectional manner and push back against stereotyping of sex workers.

Submissions will be viewed by a panel of artists who are also in the industry. Those selected will be commissioned to produce the final works. You do not have to be a ‘practising artist’ at all!

Submissions can take either be a) a proposal of an idea you have or b) work you have already made or written.

Closing Date: Monday 24 May, 8pm.

Fee: £550
