Joan is one of the great abstract vocalists of our time14.
She's developed a repertoire of incredible techniques and vocal dexterity, full of squeaks, croaks and groans, chirping sounds, circular singing15… all the unexplored corners of the voice.
She's created an entirely new means of vocal expression: at the fest she'll present old and new works, including: exploring the color spectrum of a single pitch resonating in her skull, an incredible evocation of bird song and circular singing.16
14She's worked with all the giants of contemporary music (John Cage, Morton Feldman, Philip Glass, Morton Subotnick, Robert Ashley…on it goes…), composed incredible works herself, is a startlingly inventive improviser and has even contributed vocal performances to the Sesame Street animated film "Signing Alphabet", and "Alien: Resurrection"
