Daniel Carter & Sabir Mateen’s trio with percussionist Andrew Barker; incessantly driving forward through sweat-drenched bursts of pure ecstatic freedom. “…it goes back to what my mother used to say, 'Contain yourself. Daniel and Sabir are, as far as we're concerned, connected directly to the source; their reeds-work in the great TEST and across myriad other collaborations (taking in Sunny Murray, Jemeel Moondoc, Raphe Malik and more) constantly burns. Although I wouldn’t want to suggest that the above quote sums up Daniel’s, or indeed Sabir’s playing, I do think it points to the chiselled intensity they both inhabit.

 

Certainly, for 2 reeds men steeped in the living tradition of Free Jazz, they can be shockingly, beautifully introspective as well as exploratory and free. 

 

TEST often seem to first rely on building a centre of acute, boiled down energy (and often restraint), to then build on, to strafe with higher register, emotional blasts.  It’s something you hear in much of their work. Their most recent release, and a current live trio sees them both working with percussionist Andrew Barker, seated between them, on the money, incessantly driving the group forward through sweat-drenched bursts of pure ecstatic freedom, driving the trio on in search of true, lung-bursting and boldly unrestrained expression.
